Always Do The Right Thing

Always Do the Right Thing. Although it is a lot easier said than done, it's quite simple. It's harder than one might think because doing the right thing sometimes goes against our very human nature to be selfish rather than self-less. Doing the right thing means going out of our way to help someone else, which takes time and energy away from what we might want to do or have planned for ourselves that day. It's akin to the phrase, 'practice what you preach'. And, one of the greatest preachers of all-time certainly did that, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. .

We realize the day we honor him just passed on Monday, yet we can't help but think about some of his great words of wisdom and powerful forward-thinking ideas.

For instance,

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

Does this phrase not speak exactly about 'doing the right thing'? I mean, if we are truly honest with every situation and see it through an objective lens, there is no other way to think about it/them other than, Do they have good character? Do they work hard? Do they do the right thing, even when no one is looking? This is called, 'integrity'. I'm not the fondest of the use of the phrase judging people at all, because, in my opinion, it is not our right to do so. That is for God only.

This idea can be extrapolated across many different facets of life:

Opening the door for an elderly person-doing the right thing.

Giving your seat up on the bus or train to a pregnant woman-doing the right thing.

Saying, 'thank you' and 'you're welcome' when somebody does something nice for you-doing the right thing.

You get the idea--the list goes on and on.

Let us keep this idea of 'always doing the right thing' on the forefront of our minds...for if we do, we inevitably make the world a better place.
