What's the only 'C' word that rhymes with answer? C-A-N-C-E-R. Dreaded for obvious reasons, it's the 2nd leading cause of death for human beings. To hear that word sounds like a death sentence, but it doesn't have to be. There are great scientific advances and research being done to not only improve the quality of life but to extend life (and the quality of it for that matter) for those diagnosed with it. Just knowing this can provide some much needed peace of mind and calmness amidst the uncertainty of such a diagnosis.
Every year on February 4th, the WHO (World Health Organization) and UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) lead International Awareness Day for Cancer: www.worldcancerday.org.
This year's theme is, 'I Am and I Will'. It's crazy to think that the chances of women developing some sort of cancer in their lifetime is 1 in 2 and the number is 1 in 3 for men. What's even crazier is that most people either know someone who is battling cancer or know's someone who knows someone battling cancer.
Why are we bringing this up? Because there is strength in numbers. To know we are not alone in this fight can be that extra 'umph' we need to push through trying times. We can commiserate, symphathize, and empathize with each other so as to make the near future a little easier, more bearable, and hopeful. Hope--that is the key. As long as we have that, we can muster up the energy to do the uphill climb and overcome obstacles thrown our way. Hope for a better tomorrow. And, this doesn't just apply to those suffering from cancer, but to all of us as human beings.
Let us remember all those who've lost their lives to cancer, be there for those currently struggling with it, and continue to do the same for anyone we come in contact with in the future. At the very least, we owe it ourselves and to our fellow brothers and sisters to do so. We all need help at one point or another in life. Let's not be too proud or busy to give it or receive it.
