Origins of August

Did you know where the name of this month originates from? We didn't know for sure, but had an inkling as to where it might have come from.

August comes from the Latin word augustus, meaning "consecrated" or "venerable," which in turn is related to the Latin augur, meaning "consecrated by augury" or "auspicious." In 8 B.C. the Roman Senate honored Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, by changing the name of their month Sextilis to Augustus.

We have always been fascinated with words, their meanings, and where they come from, because words informs us as to how to move forward in the world. They connect us with the past, AKA history, bring us into the present moment, and help us formulate our thoughts and actions in the future.

Books are written with words. Newspapers are written with words. Laws are written with words. TV shows, movies, and news stations all use subtitles. Most of the world around us uses words in some way, shape, or form to educate us, inform us, and, in some cases, try to tell us what to do. To us, it is vitally important to know how to use them the right way for the greatest good. Neat stuff when you think about it. So, the next time you are in a conversation with a friend, negotiating a contract, and just being yourself in a room of strangers, be careful how you choose your words before you say them out loud. They can be used in the best way for you or work against you.

Have a Terrific Tuesday and Happy August!
