National Sober Day
Whether it be drugs or alcohol, today is a day we celebrate sobriety. We know how hard it is to cut these addictions out of the daily routine, so we commend all of you who have been able to do so and stay on the straight and narrow moving forward. The greatest thing we've learned in our time running group sessions for and with those who have substance abuse issues is that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety...it is community. As human beings, we crave connection with other human beings. We have to surround ourselves with like-minded, good people who encourage and inpsire us to be better versions of ourselves, and not tear us down or bring us down to their level, becoming the worst versions of ourselves. In the 12-step program as part of AA, the last step (well, it's an extra one) is helping someone else going through the process and bring them into a state of grace and community through your involvement in their life. It's no surprise to us that having someone who has gone through the process themselves and come out on the other side a better version of themselves not dependent on substances gives more validation to it all.
With all this said, we hope you are doing your best to encourage and inspire everyone in your life, and not just those who have substance abuse issues in your life. That's the best thing we can do ever--to inspire and encourage. We all need a helping hand every so often, and you never know one day when it will be your turn to receive help. Putting good karma out there not only helps our fellow brothers and sisters, it can come back to help you later on in life. You never know. You just never know. This life is hard at times, and there's no shame in asking for help.
Let us be stewards of the gifts and talents we've been given, and helping others to help ourselves.
Happy Tuesday and National Sober Day :)
