"If you don't ever stop singing, your voice stays in shape. It's like the marathon runner. You've got to run, run, run to stay in shape."
-Sammy Hagar
This is a great comparison, and so true! As long as you continue to practice and work that throat muscle by singing as part of your daily routine, then you'll never 'lose it'. And, the same thing goes for staying in great physical condition by running as often as you can to keep your endurance up. In both cases, it's all about the body's ability to push and repair itself through muscle memory, repetition, and rest. Now, there is a big difference between working out/exercising your body past the point of exhaustion to where you actually hurt yourself as well as singing too much to the point of damaging your vocal chords and doing each just the right amount. For every person, it's different. You have to find that fine line to ride on which works best for you. The last thing you want to do is overdo it, because then you'll be sidelined and forced to rest for a long period of time rather than giving your body a planned rest to repair itself on its own in a short-term kind of way. Not only that, but I find that if I overdo something, it drives the fun and joy out of it as well. Let us figure out what is fun, enjoyable, and still pushes the limit without going over the edge. A challenge it may be, but very much necessary to long-term happiness and success.
