"Teach music and singing at school in such a way that it is not a torture but a joy for the pupil; instill a thirst for finer music in him, a thirst which will last for a lifetime."
-Zoltan Kodaly
I love it. In order to instill any sort of hunger or provide inspiration which can carry you through the most mundane and/or toughest of times, it has to be fun! I mean, why do something, especially as a child, if it is not fun? It just doesn't make any sense. The same thing goes for an adult. Of course, we have responsibilities as an adult to tend to like paying bills, house repairs, taking care of children, doing well at your job/career. But, we have to always remember to keep it light and enjoy life as much as we are able to. Why? Because it's too short. To be serious all the time not only makes life not fun, it makes it so that other people don't want to be around you as much. It can very easily turn into gloom and doom if you let it. It is truly in our best interest to 'play'. This is where children can teach us a thing or two as they believe everything is a game or some sort of 'play'. So, why would we drive the fun out of anything for them? And, why would we ever do that with something as fun and playful as music and singing. It behooves us to let them explore as much as possible while they're young, and not have too many strict rules around singing. They are just getting used to their talking voice, let alone their singing voice. Make it fun. Make it a game. Make it as playful as you can so as to encourage them to continue pursuing it. Then, and only then will we have succeeded as a teacher or role model for the next generation as it pertains to singing and/or engaging with music.
