February 14th--the day we celebrate love on a grand scale. Of course, we celebrate love every day, but this day has been deemed the day on the modern calendar where it is widely accepted to shout it from the rooftops, buy a dozen roses, candy/chocolate, make a card, and do something above and beyond what we would normally do for that special someone or someone's (besides a significant other or spouse, like a mother or grandparent) in our lives. Although it is an overly commercialized 'holiday', it's nice to know that we as a society still hold love in this high of a regard. It should be held in the highest regard, because it's the best thing we can do for anyone--to show love. There are many ways to show love--opening the door for a stranger, saying, 'Please' and 'Thank You', giving someone a hug or a high five, spending quality time with someone (the gift of our presence), writing a love letter/poem, sharing/writing a special song, and, any of the things highlighted in the second sentence above.
However, did you know that the origins of Valentine's Day were far from romantic? St. Valentine, as amazing as he was, was beheaded. Quite scary and grotesque, right? And, why did this happen? He refused to deny Jesus Christ and continued to perform marriages in the Catholic/Christian tradition of sex within the marriage. His belief and action in the faith was counter to the Roman empire, and, he paid the highest price as a result. In other words, he died a martyr of the Church, and do so in the name of Love.

Let us not forget his sacrifice and remember this great verse from The Bible as well:
1 John 4:7-12. Dear friends: let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
